A New Hobby is Great/Sad

(Spoiler Alert P1 & P3. Sorry I forgot to put it on Mr Linky).

It is great to have a new hobby, but it often means that it is all consuming and older hobbies get put to one side which is sad. One of my other hobbies is cross-stitching, although I haven't done any for weeks now.

It has crossed my mind that tangling could be done in sewing. I was particularly thinking that Blackwork is like tangling. This last week I thought it would be nice if I could somehow marry up the two hobbies..

My favourite cross-stitch charts were made by Lavender and Lace. You may know of them or even used them yourself. The one I love the most is this one called Guardian Angel:-

I am not a religious person, in fact rather the opposite, but I just loved the thought of a Goddess or Guardian Angel holding the world in her hands like this.

I took the photo of it, then traced an outline around it and transferred it to my sketch book like so:-

I then set about tangling it and this was the result. I was quite pleased for a first attempt and hope to refine it as I attempt more of them.

Now to the Diva Challenge this week. I was thrilled to see it is Holly Atwater this week and her audio meditations. I actually discovered them about four weeks after I first found this hobby and thought they were marvellous. They focus more on the meditative side of the Zentangle® Method which was marvellous for me as I have no access to a CZT at the moment. (Spoiler alert for no.3 if you click on the link in the following sentence) You can read my post about it here, I think I said most of what I thought in that post. I am really looking forward to further mediations when Holly's life calms down a bit.

I did all three meditations at the time, but I redid the first one again today. As I had done them previously I also did the Betweed challenge and included a different version of the Tripoli tangle pattern we were taught in the meditation. Here are the two results:-

  1. Hi there Ms Tortoise! I too used to do embroidery, including cross stitch and I like the Lavender and Lace designs, as well as the Butternut Road ones. AND, I did blackwork too and i suspect that is one of the reasons I took to Zentangle so quickly. I love your idea of using the cross stitch designs as templates and I think we could do it the other way round - draw a ZIA and then stitch it. As for the Challenge this week, I think your Betweed piece is really well done.

  3. I LOVE your Zentangle Inspired guardian angel! It is truly lovely! What a fabulous way to combine your hobbies...

I absolutely adore the tiles you created for the challenge and appreciate your kind words. The column of Betweed that you created without separating sections is amazing! Great idea! Thank you so much for participating in the challenge!

  5. I think your tile using Betweed and Tripoli works really well. I'll pop over to take a look at your meditative Zentangles.(Yours truly totally punted on that part of the challenge. BTW, "punted" is a reference to American football where a team "punts" the ball away to the other team. Hopefully, the reference is then understandable in the context in which I use it.) Interestingly, when I spoke to my 90 year old mother today, she spontaneously brought up that she;d like to try embroidering one of my tangle tiles.

  7. I like the combination of the betweed in different shapes. Very nice tile! I think there are several people here who cross stitch - perhaps you can exchange cross stitch zentangle patterns. Enjoy all you hobbies at once!

  8. Filling non-defined shapes with tangles is what Zentangle is all about. Using cross-stitch patterns, coloring book pages, or stencils just turns the work into ZIA's (Zentangle Inspired Art). And, that's a nice extension of Zentangle. I add tangle patterns to my art journal pages and to my card making all the time. I love seeing how you used it for yours. The other two tiles are lovely as well!

  12. The first interpretation feels so focused and clear. The second feels like a free flowing adventurous piece that led you along the way in a beautiful drawing. Nicely done. Sarah.

  13. Nicely done tiles for the diva challenge, but I was completely caught up in the angel holding the world - what a great idea to tangle this!

  14. Embroidered tangles make sense to me! Tripoli would be so pretty stitched! I used to stitch letters for scrapbooks many years ago.. 😊
